Search engines are a very strange invention of the Internet. You have all heard of the big five:

There are hundreds, if not thousands of search engines in business all over the world. They can serve many masters, like Google, or they can be designed to serve one specific topic or industry.
For example, the National Directory of Real Estate Professionals allows people who are looking for a real estate agent anywhere in the US to find one in their local area.
Meta Tags
Sorry boys and girls, I need to get a little geekie for a brief minute...
Simply put, Meta Tags are code which are imbedded into the website. This code is meant to be used and seen by one entity; a computer.
Search Engines use a computer program called a spider to visit your website, Upon arrival one of the first things they do is check your meta tag code. It contains valuable information about what you do and where you do it, This information, combined with other criteria, are used to evaluate your website and catalog it in their database.
I have included a sample set of tags so you can see what they look like:

A word of caution, the types of information search engines require to effectively catalog your site changes regularly. Meta tag code needs to be updated on a regular basis, and as one part of a website maintenance program.
No single element of the things we are discussing here will make your website a successful. It has to be a coordinated effort. Something that is a permanent part of you and your companies daily things to do list.
